We live in a city, most of us, and do not grow our own food. We depend on the honesty of others who do grow our food, and the integrity of all the people in the system that brings it to us. Most of us don’t even think about it. We have given up on knowing anything about our food.
We don’t know who grows it, who ships it, what was used to grow it, clean it, or any of it. Not because we can’t find out, but because we don’t even ask. We could find it pretty fast on the Internet. We could call, we could go visit. But we don’t.
In our club, we have joined together to get our food from the Amish (dairy), even getting A2 milk!!, a family in Wisconsin (bison), a family in Missouri (coconut cream), a guy in Downey (Honey), another in LA (fermented coconut cream and tonics), a family in Chino Hills (eggs). These are the best we have been able to source with reasonable availability.
We have been to the Amish, several times. The others have photos on their websites. Haven’t been to all of the providers. Still trusting. However, we do talk directly with them, many face to face. We get to evaluate the person, see if we feel comfortable trusting them, see how they handle problems. It is at least more direct.
We test the food for heavy metals, to evaluate the contaminants they are exposed to. (We actually need to do this again, it is time.) Not cheap, can’t do it all the time. In a perfect world, I’d have a lab I could test everything in myself. Even the farmer can be wrong, not know that something is contaminating his feed or water. Or someone can be low on cash and feed something less for a while. Happened at Rawsome.
Also in a perfect world we would have a farm where I had complete control, and visited regularly. Or had a farmer who was even more natural than I am!! (is that possible?) Nearby, that we could all go visit. And stay over, and have a summer camp for kids, and retire to, and have a year-round school, and people could come learn to feed themselves, build houses, and take care of themselves. Ah. One of my dreams.
What we have is not available in any store. So, yes, you pay a bit more, sometimes, sometimes not. And it is not as convenient, except now we have delivery too. We also have a recurring order ability, so you don’t have to remember, it will just order every week for you, and you can change it if you want to add or subtract from it, or stop it for a week. We are actually very convenient. You can also pick up in East Hollywood, Franklin and Edgemont now. Put it in the comments. Call me. 626-644-6863, text is best.
Okay, order if you haven’t! See you soon!
